Portland Trailblazers

28 December 2014

Damian Lillard and the Portland Trail Blazers came out on top in a wild point guard match-up against Russell Westbrook 115-111 in overtime in Oklahoma City.

The Blazers comeback would not have been were it not for a boneheaded series of plays from Westbrook. Westbrook was the biggest reason the Thunder were winning but a useless personal foul in the backcourt coupled with a technical allowed the Blazers to cut the lead to seven with no time coming off the clock.

The center position is one of the strongest spots on the Blazers roster.  And if you combine last seasons stats for Joel Pryzbilla and Greg Oden the numbers look pretty good. 13.4 pts, 15.7 rbs, 2.3 bks.  What team wouldn't be happy with that?

If you think about the power forward spot on the Blazers there is only one name that really comes to mind.  LaMarcus Aldridge.  LA.  L-Train.  After three seasons with Portland Aldridge has proven to be one of the best, if not the best young power forwards in the league.  And sometime within the next month or so he will likely be rewarded for his play with a near maximum contract.

Depending on how you look at it there are as many questions about the three position on the Blazer roster as there are at any other position.  And that of course is one reason the Blazers made a run at signing Hedo Turkoglu.

o we want to be our point guard?  These are two questions that have often been asked about our Portland Trailblazers over the last couple of seasons.  We've had a number of players look to claim that spot over the years, Steve Blake, Sergio Rodriguez, Jerryd Bayless, Petteri Kopponen, to name a few.  And we had another hopeful in Summer League camp in Patty Mills until he went down with an unfortunate foot injury.

no less.  Yes, faith in the “impossible.”

My faith lies with the Portland Trailblazers.

Why?

Maybe it’s because I want to do my father right by rooting for the team I grew up watching him and his friends hoot and holler for.  Maybe it’s because I’ve never lived more than 30 miles from Portland.  Maybe it’s because I enjoy rooting for the underdog.  Whatever the reason is, they get full, 100% faith from me.

Happily my Tarot cards were right on when they predicted last night's win. With the Clips holding a 10-33 record before the game there really wasn't much doubt. But wait! What is going on with the

Many fans will discuss the heartbreak of Tuesday night's game between the Orlando Magic and Portland Trailblazers.  The eight point lead with a minute and a half left, the offensive rebounds given up in crunch time and the Blazers inability to put the hammer down and prevent their first home loss.  But the biggest concern is the fact that no one felt comfortable with the ball in their hands at the end of the game.

Heading into Tuesday's game with the New York Knicks, the Portland Trail Blazers are tied for the second best record in the Western Conference, at this point in the season.  But are they really the second best team in the West?

Game Preview of Portland at Utah 11/5

On the road vs the Utah Jazz. A hard nosed veteran team that won 54 games last season and a division title. The Jazz beat us twice in preseason. But in both games a number of our frontline players sat the game out. The second time we did this there were rumors that Nate didn't want to show Jerry Sloan his full bag of tricks. We'll see. Everyone should be available for this game against the Jazz.

Game One from the 300 seats

This won’t be a statistical analysis of our first game of the year. And it won’t be the same kind of look at the game and the players you’d get from a pro who studied the game. It’s just a few random thoughts from a longtime fan who watched our team for the first time this season with an old friend and a few Widmers.

I just want to throw it out there that I’m in total football denial over here.  As far as I know, there is no NFL, and hence no knee injuries or crushing home losses to the bottom feeders of the AFC East.  It’s just too painful.  In a concerted effort to distract myself from what is definitely not happening right now (New England redemption?), and in an attempt to stay current with my local surroundings, let’s talk basketball.

Apropos of yesterday’s blog about what a last-place team should be doing, let’s look at the Toronto Blue Jays, in a similar situation as the Mariners, if not nearly as dire. In last place in one of baseball’s toughest divisions, the 38-43 Jays canned manager John Gibbons on June 20, replacing him with veteran Cito Gaston.

The Portland Trailblazers got two pivotal pieces to their new revitalized squad in Jarrett Jack, and Martell Webster, but one cant help but dwell on the past and think of what we COULD have picked up in a draft that was seen as pivotal in starting off the rejuvination of "Rip City" in the newly post-Sheed, Bonzi, Damon "Jail Blazer" days. If only we had realized how badly we needed a true point guard, and how Sebastian Telfair so wasn't the franchise player we ignorantly forced ourselves to believe. The 2005 draft was oozing with bright backcourt killers that we could have traded higher for. I'm specifically and obviously after my beginning sermon on CP3, referring to Chris Paul. Watching how the teams in the NBA have realized that their draft picks define their futures as organizations more than possibly any other draft in any other sport, why couldn't these teams (Blazers, I'm talking to you) have realized to take their picks more seriously in considering the long run and future of their success in the league. The 2005 draft was quite possibly the last truly talent full draft since last years with Oden, and Durant. Producing such players as Deron Williams, Raymond Felton, Monta Ellis, and Andrew Bynum. The Blazers had alot to work with even if they couldn't obtain that true missing piece to the reconstruction of a franchise jigsaw puzzle (Paul). But because as an organization we were in scramble mode after the complete breakdown of the once, and longtime successful fan fueled franchise, we decided to cover our eyes and played eeney miney mo. I pick you Martell, and eh...why not that bald mustachioed coy looking kid from over there at G Tech.
